Allan Rodenkam Simonsen (Vejle, Denmark, December 15, 1952), Danish ex-football player of the 70s, considered one of the best extremes of Europe of his time. He was distinguished with the Golden Ball of Europe in 1977 and chosen as the best footballer in Europe of the year.
In the summer of 1979 he signed for FC Barcelona, which came after receiving the Golden Ball two years earlier, with the aura of being considered the best player in Europe, and with the difficult ballot to make forget the Dutch Johan Neeskens, who occupied the position of foreigner.
Despite the difficulties and also known for his short stature, he immediately won the affection of the Barcelona fans thanks to his excellent class, speed, ease of dribbling and the number of assists or goal passes he gave to teammates like Hansi Krankl or Quini.
At FC Barcelona he coincided with legendary players such as Hansi Krankl, Quini, Rexach, Carrasco, Schuster and Urruti. Together they were on the verge of winning the League on three occasions, although they never succeeded because of various circumstances.
In the 1980-1981 season the team was the leader for a good part of the championship, but two months after the end of the season, Quini’s kidnapping threw all the possibilities of the team to ruin. The players could not overcome the events, and the team finished fifth, four points behind the champion, the Real Sociedad de San Sebastián.
In the following season, 1981-1982, everything indicated that FC Barcelona was going to proclaim itself champion. The team played well in spite of not being able to count, during most of the championship, with the German Bernd Schuster, to whom the player of the Athlétic de Bilbao Andoni Goikoetxea had broken the knee in a strong entrance. There were six games left until the end of the championship when the team, coached by the German Udo Lattek, had six points ahead of the second-placed Real Sociedad. But Barcelona lost 4 matches and drew two, and ended up losing the League, which Real Sociedad won for the second year in a row, two points clear of FC Barcelona.
Simonsen could not win any League with Barcelona, but the King’s Cup of 1981 and the Recopa de Europa of 1982. The final of the Recopa was played at the Camp Nou, and FC Barcelona defeated the Liege Standard 2 to 1, with a goal from Simonsen and another from Quini to pass Simonsen .
In the summer of 1982 he was forced to leave FC Barcelona, since the club had hired the Argentine Diego Armando Maradona, considered at that time the best player in the world.
The club tried to approve a modification of the regulations, so that each team could line up three foreigners in the league, but most of the rest of the clubs opposed it fearing a great superiority of Barcelona. The club offered to Simonsen the possibility of continuing in the Catalan discipline, as substitute, awaiting an injury to the two foreigners chosen to compete, Maradona and Schuster, or a change in the regulations. Simonsen preferred to leave before the prospect of spending many months without playing.
He signed for Charlton Athletic, of the English first division, but left the club after a few months because Charlton did not pay him what was stipulated in the contract.
He finished his career at Vejle, the club in his hometown, where he had started football. A brutal entry by French player Ivon Le Roux, central defender, ended his career.
Once retired, he took the title of coach and led various teams of the Danish first division. He became for several years the national coach of the Faroe Islands and of the Luxembourg national team.
He is the only player who has scored goals in the three European finals for clubs, ie European Cup, Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup. Since the Recopa has disappeared, this honor will not be shared with any other player.
