Born in Mishawaka, Indiana, his real name was Harry Leonard Albershart. Lane’s career began in 1929 with a role in Not Quite Decent. From 1929 to 1936 he appeared in twenty-four films. In 1937 his career rebounded, and he achieved success in several films, including The Law West of Tombstone in 1938. However, from 1940 his work was oriented towards the Westerns, where he would achieve his greatest fame. His first great success in the genre came with King of the Royal Mounted, a film serial made in 1942, and adaptation of the work of Zane Gray King of the Royal Mounted, playing Lane the lead role. He starred in several titles about the Canadian Mounted Police, including The Yukon Patrol and King of the Mounties serials.

From 1940 to 1966 he made a total of eighty-two performances, both in the cinema and on television, most of them being westerns filmed in the 1950s. One of his most curious works consisted of giving voice to the talking horse of the television series Mister Ed.

He retired in 1966, and resided in Woodland Hills (Los Angeles), California, at the time of his death in 1973 because of cancer. He was buried in the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.
