Alfred Nobel’s Biography

Alfred Nobel was born into a family of engineers. When he was nine years old, the family moved to Russia, where he and his brothers received a careful education in natural sciences and humanities.

He returned to Sweden in 1863, completing there the investigations he had started in the field of explosives: in 1863 he managed to control by a detonator the explosions of nitroglycerin, invented by the Italian Ascanio Sobrero; in 1865 he perfected the system with a mercury detonator; and in 1867 he obtained dynamite, a plastic explosive resulting from absorbing nitroglycerin in a solid porous material, thereby reducing the risks of accidents (the accidental explosions of nitroglycerin, one of which had killed his own brother Emil, they had aroused strong criticism of Nobel and his factories).

In 1895 he founded Elektrokeviskas Aktiebolaget, better known as Eka, in Bengtsfors, Sweden, which was eventually taken over by the AkzoNobel group, which still retains part of its name.

He also developed his literary abilities to write poetry in English. His work Nemesis, a tragedy in prose about the episode by Beatrice Cenci, inspired in part by Shelley’s work The Cenci, was printed while it was dying. The complete circulation of the work, except for three copies, was destroyed when it was considered scandalous and blasphemous. Currently, in addition to one edition in Swedish, there is another one in French.

In his testament signed on November 27, 1895 at the Swedish-Norwegian Club of Paris, Nobel institutes with his fortune a fund that would reward the best exponents in Literature, Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry and of peace. Later, the Economics Prize was created, although it is not properly a Nobel, but in memory of Alfred Nobel A cerebral hemorrhage caused his death when he was at home in San Remo, Italy, on December 10, 1896 at the age 63 years old.

It is estimated that his fortune at the time of his death was 33 & nbsp; 000 & nbsp; 000 crowns, of which he bequeathed to his family only 100 & nbsp; 000 crowns. The rest was destined to the Nobel Prizes.
