He began studying at age nine at Enrique IV School, where in 1827 he won the literary dissertation prize in the general competition. Thanks to Paul Foucher, brother-in-law of Victor Hugo, he started his 17th birthday at the “Cenacle”, as well as Charles Nodier’s salon in the Arsenal library.

After exercising with medicine, law, drawing, English and piano, he was one of the first writers to adopt romantic aesthetics. At age 20, his literary notoriety was accompanied by a dubious reputation, which also feeds his facet dandy. And, from 1833 to 1835, he has a passionate romance with the novelist George Sand. He was librarian of the Ministry of the Interior during the July Monarchy, to be later dismissed in 1848. Later he was also librarian of the Ministry of Public Instruction during the Second Empire. He received the Legion of Honor on April 24, 1845 at the same time as Balzac and was elected a member of the French Academy in 1852.

As a poet he publishes his Tales of Spain and Italy, although his most famous poems are Rolla and the Four Nights (May Night, August Night, October Night and December Night), both works collected in the volume New Poems . In the lyrical field he is also owed the books The caprices of Mariana, The chestnuts of fire, The cup and the lips, In what the young girls dream and Namouna. He is also credited with the authorship of the erotic novel Gamiani: two nights of pleasure (1833).
