Clausen was born in the city of Minneapolis, in the state of Minnesota, and grew up in Jamestown, North Dakota. He studied at the University of the State of Dakota, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Berklee Music Institute of Boston, obtaining postgraduate degrees in Musical Arrangements & amp; Composition. He began his musical career playing bass and French horn, becoming an instructor at Berklee.

Clausen has composed songs for many television series and films, including Moonlighting (for which he received six Emmy nominations), The Simpsons (for which he won two Emmys, three Annie Awards and three International Monitor awards, and received 18 more nominations for the Emmys and three for the Annies), Bette, The Critic, ALF, Christine Cromwell, Dads, Double Agent, Fame, Harry, Lime Street, My First Love, Murder In Three Acts, Police Story, She Knows Too Much, Stranded, and Wizards & amp; Warriors.

Other films in which Clausen has collaborated are Half-Baked and Number One With A Bullet. In addition, he has composed additional music for numerous feature films, including Airplane II: The Sequel, The Beastmaster, Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, Dragnet, Into The Night, Micki & amp; Maude, Mr. Mom, The Naked Gun: From the Files of the Police Squad !, Splash, Weird Science, and Wise Guys. He has been musical director and composer for various television programs, such as The Donny & amp; Marie Show, Mary and The Mary Tyler Moore Variety Hour.

The albums on which Clausen has worked (as a composer, orchestra director or producer) include the album The Simpsons: Songs In The Key Of Springfield by Rhino Records, Go Simpsonic With The Simpsons: More Original Music From The Television Series , and his future CD, which he recorded together with the Alf Clausen Jazz Orchestra, Swing Can Really Hang You Up The Most.

Clausen also composed the music for the episode “Les Miseranimals” of the series Rita And Runt, along with the writer and scriptwriter of the program, Deanna Oliver.

His compositions and musical arrangements have been used by many artists and many commercials, such as the Universal Studios Tram Tour 2000. He has also composed for musicians such as Buddy Rich, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Ray Charles, Woody Herman , Stan Kenton, and Denny Christianson.
