Alexis Smith’s Biography
Her real name was Gladys Smith , and she was born in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. She was tall, one of the tallest actresses of the moment, with Kay Francis and Ingrid Bergman.
After highlighting a play, Smith signed a contract with the Warner Brothers studios. His first performances were in small roles without reflecting the titles of credit, needing several years for his career to become important. His first accredited role was in the feature film Dive Bomber (1941), playing the main female character, along with Errol Flynn. His performance in The Constant Nymph (1943) was well received, and gave him access to more important roles. In the 1940s she performed with some of the great male stars of the era, including Errol Flynn in Gentleman Jim (1942) and San Antonio (1945) (in which she sang a version of the ballad Some Sunday Morning), Humphrey Bogart in The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947), Cary Grant in Night and Day (1946), and Bing Crosby in Here Comes the Groom (1951).
Other Smith films include Rhapsody In Blue (1945), Of Human Bondage (1946) and The Young Philadelphians (1959).
Smith appeared on the cover of May 3, 1971, of Time magazine with the announcement that he would play on Broadway the work of Stephen Sondheim Follies, produced by Hal Prince. In 1972 she won the Tony for best actress in a musical for that performance. Then, in 1973, he worked at The Women. In 1975 he played the comedy Summer Brave, and in 1978 the musical Platinum.
In addition, Smith had a recurring role on the television series Dallas, in 1984 and 1990. For her work on the Cheers sitcom in 1990, she was nominated for an Emmy.
Alexis Smith died in Los Angeles, California, in 1993, because of a brain tumor. His latest film, The Age of Innocence (1993), was released shortly after his death. I had not had children. His remains were incinerated.
