Alexander Parkes (Birmingham, December 29, 1813 – London, June 29, 1890) was a metallurgist and inventor of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He created the parkesina, the first artificial plastic. He obtained at least 66 patents during his lifetime, all in connection with electrical galvanizing and plastics.

Alexander Parkes’s Biography

He was the son of a manufacturer of brass locks. As a young man, he did his apprenticeship in a brass foundry in which he worked at the foundry department. From there, he went to work in a company of electroplating, in which he developed, among others, processes of silver bath, which allow to grow elements as fragile as flowers. His work in these industries led him to experiment with solutions of rubber and cellulose nitrate.
