Alexander Blok’s Biography

Early years and influences

Blok was born in St. Petersburg, in a sophisticated family of intellectuals. Some of his relatives were men of letters: his father was a professor of law in Warsaw and his maternal grandfather, Andréi Béketov, rector of the University of St. Petersburg. After their parents separated, Blok lived with aristocratic relatives in Shájmatovo. It was influenced by Fiódor Tiútchev and Afanasi Fet. These influences determine his first poetic pieces, later compiled in the book Ante Lucem.

He fell in love with Liubov Mendeléyeva, daughter of the chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, and married her on August 17, 1903. Later, Blok would write a series of poems dedicated to her, The Verses of the Beautiful Lady (Stijí or Prekrásnoi). Dame, 1904) where he transforms his wife into the timeless archetype of the feminine soul or of eternal femininity.

Blok poems

The mystical and idealized images presented in his first book helped to establish Blok as the leader of the Russian symbolist movement. His first verses are impeccably musical and rich in sound, but later he introduced rhythmic patterns and odd beats. The poetic inspiration came naturally to him, often producing unforgettable images of the most banal environments and trivial events (Fábrika, 1903). Consequently, his mature poems are often based on the conflict between the Platonic vision of ideal beauty and the disappointing reality of industrial surroundings (Neznakomka (Unknown), 1906).

The image of St. Petersburg that Blok created for his next collection of poems, The City (1904-08), was impressionistic and at the same time mysterious. His following collections helped him increase his reputation to fabulous heights. He was compared to Aleksandr Pushkin frequently. In the 1910s, Blok was almost universally admired by literary colleagues and his influence on younger poets was virtually insupportable. Anna Ajmátova, Marina Tsvetáyeva, Borís Pasternak and Vladímir Nabókov important works in tribute to Blok. Blok is indeed one of the titans of the Silver Age of Russian literature.

Blok received the 1917 revolution with mixed feelings: it brought him new hope, but he was frustrated by the Soviet regime.

After the revolution, he wrote relatively little, and his poem “The Twelve” (January-February 1918) generated controversy with the same symbolists. In this work, Blok accompanied the innovative spirit of his time, using the space on the page as a configurator of the rhythm of the poem.

Blok fell ill and died of heart disease. Buried in the Smolénskoe cemetery in St. Petersburg and transferred to the Vólkovo cemetery afterwards.
