Aleksei_Brusilov’s Biography

He was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, and was educated in the Imperial Page Corps, his family belonged to the rural nobility of the south of the Empire, and he married a cousin of Prime Minister Piotr Stolypin and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Aleksandr Izvolski, skilled in the intrigues that divided the Russian high command, managed to ascend rapidly in the ranks.

He took part in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 as a cavalry officer, and reached the rank of general in 1906. At the beginning of the First World War he led the 8th Russian Army.In September 1914, he faced the Austro-Hungarian Empire and advanced to the Carpathians. He had a remarkable ability to choose capable subordinates.

In the summer of 1915 his army is rejected to Poland. In March 1916, he was given the command of the southwestern front, which grouped four Russian armies, until then had been commanded by the influential general Nikolai Ivanov. In June, he launched over Galitzia what became known as Brusilov Offensive. This offensive, which at first seemed victorious and promising, turned out to be extraordinarily costly in terms of human resources, but it served to convince Romania to go to war. In spite of the not very clear result of this battle, the prestige of Brusílov was not affected, and after the Revolution of February it reached the position of commander in chief of the Russian armies. In July 1917, he led a new offensive in Galicia, the Kerensky Offensive, a resounding failure, especially due to the very weak morale of his soldiers and the lack of relevant officers, since many of these had been set aside by the provisional Government .

After these defeats, Brusilov lost command of the army in August 1917, and would have to wait until 1920 before he could resume his military career. He joined the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War, served in the Red Army during the 1920 Polish campaign but did not play an important military role. He was appointed military adviser first and then a cavalry inspector, and was marginalized by the new power.

He retired in 1924 and died in 1926 in Moscow, after having written and published his memoirs of war.
