María Alejandra Barrales Magdaleno, known as Alejandra Barrales (Mexico City, July 17, 1967) is a Mexican lawyer and politician, since December 2017 she was a pre-candidate for the PRD to contest the headquarters of Mexico City. As of December 30, 2017, she is on an indefinite leave as a senator. From July 2016 to December 2017 she was President of the Party of the Democratic Revolution Until 2016 she was Secretary of Public Education of the City of Mexico Senator (2012-2015) and deputy in the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District. He joined the PRD in 2002 and in 2008 presided over the party in Mexico City.

He studied at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (1996-1997), he graduated in Human Resources Administration and Public Administration from the University of the Cloister of Sor Juana (1997). He graduated in Law from the Universidad Mexicana UNIMEX (2005-2007) and completed a master’s degree in Public Administration at the National Institute of Public Administration with the thesis of Professionalization of Legislative Bodies. The Case of the Legislative Assembly of the D.F. (2007-2009).

From 1988 until 2000, he worked as a flight attendant at Mexicana de Aviación. The airline filed for bankruptcy and fired 5,000 surcharges. Barrales then began her career in the union struggle in the Trade Union Association of Aviation Surcharges ASSA, first as press secretary (1989-1991) and later, when she was 27 years old, as General Secretary (1995-2001).

For her union achievements, she was invited to participate in two national movements aimed at achieving new forms of representation of Mexican trade unionism: the Federation of Trade Unions of Goods and Services (FESEBS), where she served as General Secretary (1997- 2000) and the National Union of Workers (UNT), in which he held the Vice Presidency for Political, Economic and Social Affairs (1997)

Political trajectory

In the year 2000 she was elected for the first time deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District.

In 2001 he joined the Government of the State of Michoacán, led by Lázaro Cárdenas Batel, who entrusted him with the creation of the Social Development Secretariat (2001-2002).

In the 2012 elections, Alejandra Barrales was elected Senator of the Republic for the Federal District for the LXII Legislature where she chaired the Commission of Radio, Television and Cinematography and was part of the commissions of the Federal District, of the Labor Commission and Social Security and the Foreign Relations Commission (2012-2015).

In July 2015 she was appointed to the head of the Education Secretariat of the DF Government, a position she resigned when she ran for the national presidency of the Democratic Revolution Party.

On July 16, 2016, the National Council of the PRD was elected a new national president of the party for the period 2014-2017, replacing Agustín Basave Benítez, who left office on July 2.
