Alberto Tomba born on December 19, 1966 and popularly called “the bomb”, is a retired professional skier of alpine skiing and Italian nationality. He achieved remarkable success during the late 80s and 90s in slalom and giant slalom, winning 3 gold medals in different winter Olympic games.

Alberto Tomba’s Biography

First years

Tomba la bomba is the son of Marco and Maria Gracia Tomba and was born in Castel de Britti, San Lazzaro di Savena, a village not far from Bologna, in an area without mountaineering tradition. Tomba started practicing various sports such as tennis, soccer or motorcycling, but his biggest passion turned out to be skiing. He began his professional career in 1983, only 17 years old in Sweden with the Italian team C2.

In 1981 he took part in the Junior World Ski Championships, getting a fourth place in the national team B. That same year, in a parallel slalom held on the hill of San Siro in Milan Tomba surprised by defeating all the skiers of the Team A. After winning three European ski cups he made his first debut in the Alpine ski World Cup in 1985 at the Madonna di Campiglio ski resort. A year later, in Åre, Sweden, he returned to surprise in the world championship finishing sixth after having started in the 62nd position. His first podiums were in Alta Badia, at the end of that year and in the World Ski Championships of Crans Montana of 1987, where he won the bronze medal in the giant slalom.
