Albert Speer Short Bio

Albert Speer (born Berthold Konrad Hermann Albert Speer ; Mannheim, Baden, German Empire, March 19, 1905 – London, England, September 1, 1981 ) was a German architect and Minister of Armament and War of the Third Reich during World War II.

Speer was Adolf Hitler’s chief architect before assuming the ministerial office. He is known as “the Nazi who asked for forgiveness” because in the Nuremberg trials and in his memoirs he accepted his responsibility for the crimes of the Nazi regime. Despite this, their level of involvement in the persecution of Jews and their knowledge of the Holocaust remain a matter of controversy.

Speer joined the Nazi Party in 1931 and immediately began a political and governmental career that lasted fourteen years. His training as an architect helped him gain importance within the party and also became a member of the circle closest to the Führer, as Hitler commissioned him to design and build several buildings, including the Reich Chancellery and the Zeppelin Field of Nuremberg, headquarters of the multitudinous congresses of the party. Speer also designed an ambitious reconstruction of Berlin that included the creation of huge buildings, wide avenues and a reorganized transport system. Minister of Armament and War of Adolf Hitler since February 1942, Speer was able to maintain during the conflict a high production of military equipment despite the massive and devastating bombing of the Allies on Germany.

After the war, he was tried in Nuremberg and sentenced to twenty years in prison for his role in the Nazi regime, mainly for the use of forced laborers. He served his entire sentence in West Berlin, most of it in Spandau prison, and after his release in 1966 published two successful autobiographical books: Memoirs: Hitler and the Third Reich seen from within and Diario de Spandau. In them he details his close relationship with Hitler and offers a unique perspective on the functioning of the Nazi regime. Later he wrote a third book, Infiltration, on the Schutzstaffel (SS) (paramilitary organization of the Third Reich).

Albert Speer died of natural causes in 1981 during a visit to London.
