Akira Yamaoka (山岡 晃 Yamaoka Akira, born February 6, 1968 in Niigata, Japan). He is a musician and musical composer of video games. He has composed sound and environmental scores for several videogames published by Konami. Yamaoka studied design and interior design at Tokyo Art College. After being an independent composer, he joined Konami on September 23, 1993, and left the company at the end of November 2009.
Yamaoka is best known for his work on the Silent Hill video game series, in which he has composed the entire soundtrack, as well as the sound effects of the four games (excluding Silent Hill: Play Novel for GBA and “Waiting for you” in Silent Hill, composed by Rika Muranaka). Since Silent Hill 3, he has played an important role as the producer of the series, continuing also with his work of musical composition.
The sound of Yamaoka commonly contains strong melancholic backgrounds and is generally identified with the dark ambient, trip-hop, and rock genres. From Silent Hill 3, he also started working in collaboration with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Joe Romersa for vocal compositions.
Much of his work from previous titles has been compiled for the adaptation in 2006 of the film Silent Hill, which is directed by Christophe Gans.
His music from Silent Hill 2 was mounted live in 2005 at the third concert of music for games (Symphonic Game Music Concert) in Leipzig, Germany. Yamaoka also presented music by Silent Hill at the world premiere of PLAY! A Video Game Symphony on May 27, 2006 in Chicago, Illinois, accompanying the orchestra with a 7-string guitar.
Currently you can also find their songs in the Konami series of musical games, Dance dance revolution, specifically, in the DDR / DS SuperNOVA version, where you can find outstanding themes such as iFUTURELIST, Your Rain, I feel, among others , and in the Beatmania IIDX series where you can find a good part of the albums on your iFUTURELIST album.
