Ahmed Hassan Zewail (in Arabic: أحمد زويل) (Damanhur, Egypt, February 26, 1946 – August 2, 2016) was an American university chemist and professor, of Egyptian origin, He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999 for his studies of the transition states of chemical reactions using femtosecond spectroscopy.
He graduated in chemistry from the University of Alexandria and later moved to the United States to do a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1974 in the same discipline. After working two years at the University of Berkeley, he moved to the California Institute of Technology, where he held the Linus Pauling Chair in Chemical Physics from 1990 until his death.
Zewail was married and had four children.
