Agnes Smedley’s Biography

Born in 1892 [a] in Osgood (Missouri). From an early age he came into contact with the leftist world. Direct witness to the hard life of his parents – his father was a miner and his mother was a washerwoman – they had a great influence on Smedley.

During the First World War he campaigned for the independence of India, and was arrested in 1918 by officers of the Office of Naval Intelligence – although he would be freed – and later moved to Germany, where he met the communist Indian Virendranath Chattopadhyaya, with whom he came to reside.With the hand of Chattopadhyaya he took part in several leftist causes.

Considered a self-made woman, Smedley also stood out as a feminist activist.At the end of the 1920s she moved to China as a correspondent for a German newspaper. In 1929 he published his autobiographical Daughter of Earth, which was very well received by the public, and during his time in Shanghai he met the Soviet spy Richard Sorge, to whom he gave crucial help-for example, Sorge, through Smedley, he entered contact with the Japanese journalist Hotsumi Ozaki- In China he served as a correspondent for the Frankfurter Zeitung and the Manchester Guardian, covering numerous issues, including the Chinese Civil War. According to the author Ruth Price, there would be evidence that Agnes Smedley would have carried out espionage work for the Comintern and the Soviet Union.

Died on May 6, 1950 in Oxford, victim of bronchopneumonia.
