Adolf Friedrich Johann Butenandt (Bremerhaven, March 24, 1903 – Munich, January 18, 1995) was a German biochemist and university professor who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939.

Adolph’s Biography

He studied at the University of Marburg and the University of Göttingen, where he graduated in 1927, having taught Adolf Windaus. Since 1931 he taught at the University of Göttingen and since 1933 at the Higher Technical School of Danzig.

In 1936 he was appointed director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Biochemistry (now called Max Planck) in Berlin-Dahlem.

Since 1945 he taught and researched at the University of Tübingen, and later between 1956 and 1971, he was professor of physiological chemistry at the University of Munich and president of the Max Planck Society for the Progress of Science between 1960 and 1972.
