LOUAY M. SAFI
 


Executive Director of ISNA Leadership Development Center (ILDC), Plainfield, Indiana.  He is fellow of the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) and serves on the steering committee of the Muslim-Christian Initiative on the Nuclear Weapons Danger.

Has published extensively on such issues as socio-political development, modernization, democracy, human rights, and Islamic resurgence, including eight books and numerous academic papers. He received a doctorate of philosophy in political science from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, 1992.

Author of eight books, including: Tensions and Transitions in the Muslim World, (University Press of America, 2003), Peace and the Limits of War (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 2001), The Challenge of Modernity (University Press of America, 1994), Truth and Reform (The Open Press, 1998), The Foundation of Knowledge (International Islamic University of Malaysia, 1996), Al-‘Aqidah wa al-Syiasah (International Institute of Islamic Thought, 1996), and I’mal al ‘Aql (Dar al-Fikr, 1998)

Served as founding director of  Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (1999-2007), Executive Director (1995-97) and Director of Research (1999-2003) of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), Editor of the Journal of Islamic Social Sciences (1999-2003), and President of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists (1999-2003).

Also served as an Associate Professor of Political Science (1994-99), Dean of Research (1998-99), and Senate Member at the International Islamic University, Malaysia (1995-99). Also served as Visiting Professor at George Washington University (2001).

Participated in numerous international forums and conferences, and contributed articles to various academic journals, including the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences, Islamic Studies, Intellectual Discourse, Middle East Affairs Journal, Journal of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies, Islamiyyat al-Macrifa, al-Mustaqbal al-Arabi, Minbar al-Hiwar, al-Insan, and al-Muslim al-Mucasir.

Appeared on numerous radio and TV programs, including CNN, BBC, Monte Carlo, Fox News, PBS, Middle East TV (MBC), Al-Jazeera TV, Voice of America, Malaysian Television, and others.
